Create & Add Pieces to a Program

Create & Add Pieces to a Program is the standard, flexible way to create a program in Sage Score. Use it for concerts, recitals, services, performances, or any other event where you want to build the program piece by piece.

You can build the program by searching and adding pieces manually, or use the Ask Sage prompt to generate suggestions from your library.

Need a different way to build a program? See Creating programs for an overview of the available program creation methods.

Add the program details

Start by entering the basic information for your program:

  • Program name

  • Program date

  • Ensemble Type

You can also use the Ask Sage field to describe the kind of program or repertoire you are looking for.

For example, you might ask for:

  • A reflective fall concert for concert band

  • A short program centered on renewal

  • Pieces under five minutes

  • Accessible repertoire for a younger ensemble

  • A program with contrasting moods

If you leave Ask Sage blank, Sage will create the program without generating piece suggestions.

Select Create Program when you're ready to begin building it.

Add pieces to the program

The main program workspace shows your selected pieces in the center.

Use the panel on the right to search your library and, when an Ask Sage prompt is present, review Sage's recommendations.

Choose the pieces you want to include and add them to the program.

You remain in control of the final program. Sage's recommendations are suggestions, and you can add, remove, or reorder pieces as needed.

Refine your Sage prompt

You can revise the Ask Sage prompt at any time from the program settings.

If you change the prompt and want a new set of recommendations, select the refresh icon to regenerate suggestions.

This is useful when your programming direction evolves. For example, you might initially ask for a broad fall program and later refine the prompt to request more energetic repertoire, a shorter total duration, or music for a specific theme.

Updated suggestions appear in the panel on the right without replacing pieces you have already chosen.

Organize pieces into program segments

For longer or more structured programs, you can organize pieces into segments.

Right-click a selected piece to:

  • Create a new program segment

  • Add the piece to an existing segment

Segments can help organize programs with:

  • Multiple themes or sections

  • A first and second half

  • An intermission

  • Distinct musical arcs

  • Sets performed by different groups

Use segments when the order and structure of the program communicate more than a simple list of pieces.

Associate pieces with performing ensembles

When a piece will be performed by a particular ensemble, associate that ensemble with the piece in the program.

This is recommended even when the association feels obvious, because ensemble assignments can affect what members see in an enabled Member Hub.

For programs involving multiple ensembles, assigning each piece to the correct performing group helps ensure that members see the repertoire that is relevant to them.

Edit and save the program

From the program workspace, you can also:

  • Edit the program name and date

  • Add a time

  • Update Ensemble Type

  • Add tags

  • Reorder pieces

  • Remove pieces

  • Update the Ask Sage prompt

  • Regenerate suggestions

When the program is ready, select Save program.

You can return to the program later to make additional changes as your plans develop.
